Karkala, Apr 7: Rajya Sabha member, journalist and ex-union minister Dr Arun Shourie said, the union government has failed to arrest the inflation because of its faulty economic policies. The wrong policies of the government have worked to the detriment of the country's development, he alleged.
Delivering a lecture on 'Global Economic Meltdown and Options for India' at Nitte Justice K S Hegde Management Institute auditorium on Monday April 6, Shourie said the government failed to make provisions for the waiver of loans and it had also failed to provide for the chemical fertilizer subsidy in the budget. As a result, inflation worsened, he analyzed.
"It is important to face the ill affects of faulty policies or any other developments properly. However, the country is not able to withstand the after-affects. Our own operations to combat them have created problems. Sub-standard administration is one of the reasons for this situation. When reforms are blocked, economic meltdown occurs. The textile sector started experiencing problems even before the global meltdown began. Proper programmes should be chalked out, taking into account all the changes in the industrial scenario and properly identifying the areas that are facing problems through studies," he opined.
Director of the Institute Dr M S Mooditaya welcomed. Academic Council chairman Dr N K Tingalaya, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik and Post Graduate courses co-ordinator Prof P R Chadaga were at the dais.
Prof Radhakrishna Sharma compered the programme. Registrar Prof K R Karnik proposed vote of thanks.
