Mangalore, Mar 29: The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has condemned the recent attacks on under trials of the Kaup mosque incident lodged in the sub-jail in the city.
A press statement released by P B D’Sa, district president, PUCL, said the attacks were unlawful and an instance of human rights violation. It also said that as the under trials are in court custody, the attacks amounted to contempt of court.
The under trials of the Kaup mosque attack were allegedly beaten up by other inmates on Tuesday March 24.
The PUCL demanded serious action on those guilty of the attacks and also urged the court to take suitable action by considering the attacks a violation of the rights of prisoners and under trails belonging to the minority community.
The press release added that the attack on inmates was not occurring in the sub-jail for the first time and there have been many reports of other such attacks.
It also said that Bajrang Dal leader Mahendra Kumar when arrested was accorded royal treatment in the same sub-jail and instigated attacks on inmates belonging to the minority community.
