Mangalore, Mar 25: The district crime branch police arrested two people in a racket involving fake registration certificates (RCs) of vehicles.
T H Asif Iqbal (35), resident of Tumbe in Bantwal, and Ananda Poojary (33), resident of Mallandur Village in Chikmagalur, have been arrested.
Police seized nine fake RCs from them. Investigations have revealed that they used seven RCs to secure a loan of about Rs 1 crore from finance companies.
Police arrested the duo from a lodge in B C Road.
The police said that the racket has10 members, with the kingpin being Ismail, a resident of Nandavar in Bantwal who is also known as ‘RTO Ismail’.
Usman, broker in RTO, Basma Anwar, Shameer and Hidayatthulla from Kumpala, Nasir, resident of Thumbe, Ahmed Bava from Mudipu, Hakeem from Deralakatte, and Ahmed Bava from Krishnapura, are the other members of the gang who are absconding.
Their modus operandi involved getting copies of registration certificates from those who contacted them for selling their vehicles. They would use the photocopy of the RC to create a new registration copy.
The DCIB police team under the direction of superintendent of police Dr Subrahmanyeshwara Rao, was headed by inspector H N Venkatesh Prasanna, with ASI Narayana Maniyani and constables Narendra, Chethan Botyadi, Dinesh Bekal, Shashidhara Shetty, Ganesh, Darmendra, Santhosh, Prashanth, Shantha Shetty and Devayya participating in the operation.
