Panaji, Mar 24: Amidst the different views expressed on Oscar award-winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the Goa legislative assembly today passed a resolution congratulating Indian musicians and the cast which won the coveted Academy Awards.
 
The Goa assembly congratulated A R Rehman, the first Indian to win two Oscars for his scintillating music in the movie as also Resul Pookutty for winning the Oscar for the best sound mixing for the same movie.
 
The motion moved by Chief Minister Digamber Kamat also congratulated Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Imran Khan, Ayush Khedekar, Tanaya Chheda, Rubina Ali Querishi, Tanvi Lonkar, Madhur Mittal, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, Ashutosh Gajiwala and others for their performances in the film.
 
The House also congratulated Pinki Sonkar, the child artist and others for their best performance in ‘Smile Pinki’, which won the Oscar in the short film documentary category.
 
The discussion on the floor began with BJP legislator Damodar Naik supporting the motion congratulating Rehman and Pookutty. In the same breath, he alleged that some scenes in the movie were aiming to divide the community.
 
“Does the movie need to be congratulated? It tried to divide the community. Why should we take credit for what Danny Boyle did?” he questioned.
 
He objected to the frequent depiction of poverty in India by western filmmakers.
 
“Whatever has been picturized in the movie is a shame for Indians and politicians,” added Naik.
 
The chief minister, however, rubbished the BJP legislator’s remarks.
 
“You must be able to face the ground reality. You cannot run away from it. You must face and take steps to correct the ground reality,” said Kamat.
 
 He stated that we should try to understand the feelings behind the film.
 
Congress minister Manohar Asgaonkar and deputy speaker Mauvin Godinho also spoke on the motion supporting it.
