Mangaluru, Apr 19: People who have been waiting to get their pending work in government offices done can heave a sigh of relief. As there would be some let up for the officials, who were tied up by election duty all these days, from the provisions of the code of conduct, many government offices are likely to start functioning on Saturday April 20 after holiday on Friday.

For the last few weeks, citizens who visited government offices used to get the stock reply that officials have been deputed on election duty. Now, as flying squads and static surveillance teams have been disbanded on completion of election, these officials are now free to resume their work in their parent departments. 172 employees deputed on flying squad duties and 138 more associated with static surveillance will be able to serve the general public now.

Particularly works relating to drinking water, those which have to be undertaken before the beginning of the monsoon etc may be taken up on priority. However, the people's representatives will not be able to hold progress review meetings. The officials say they are waiting for the guidelines from the election commission.

The entire code of conduct will be a thing of the past on May 29. The code of conduct will continue to be strict in constituencies where elections have not been held. Check posts set up by departments other than static surveillance department will continue to function, it is gathered.
