On Sunday March 22 evening, Uppinangady sub-inspector of police Nagesh Kadri, assisted by other personnel of the police station, arrested two persons from Kuppetty Junction on the evening of Sunday March 22. The duo has been accused of robbing arecanut merchant Hanif and driver Rasheed by throwing chilli powder at them near Mugeradka Cross on national highway 48 on Saturday March 21 night.
The arrested persons, identified as Navin from Ilantila and Mohan from Mogru, reportedly sought lift from areca merchant Hanif, when he was about to board his Mahindra Pick-Up van from his shop, to go to his home located in Uppinangady from Nellyady on Saturday night. They reportedly asked to be dropped at Uppinangady and the incident occurred at around 8 pm.
As the vehicle approached Mugeradka Cross, they requested to be dropped. As the vehicle came to a halt, they reportedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of vehicle driver Rashid and owner Hanif, and tried to snatch away the bag containing money from them. After encountering some resistance from the victims, they succeeded in taking away cash amounting to Rs 35,000. Both Rashid and Hanif are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Puttur.
At about 10 pm, a case was registered in Uppinangady police station and arrested were made based on the evidence recorded by the victims about the appearance and other features of the robbers.
