Mangalore, Mar 8: “The loyalty of the legal profession has declined as seen in certain recent incidents in the country. Where the lawyers were seen only in court or its premises, now they are also found in agitations and other activities”, said Karnataka Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde.
He was speaking after inauguration of the birth centenary celebrations of renowned senior advocate Muggagutthu K Yelyanna Poojary at T V Ramana Pai Hall on Saturday March 7.
Justice Hegde said the lawyers must bring back the loyalty of the legal profession to the caliber which existed during the lifetime of K Yelyanna Poojary, and stated that he is a role model for those who want to be good professionals.
Citing the Supreme Court judgement on the advocates’ agitations in Tamil Nadu, he said that it illustrated what was currently happening in the legal profession. Justice Hegde also talked about corruption and advised the lawyers to change society to a dignified one by adhering to ethics.
Veerappa Moily, chairman, administrative committee of India, presided over the function.
Former advocate general of the state B V Acharya released the souvenir ‘Kalpavruksha’, on K Yelyanna Poojary. Justice Abdul Nazeer of the High Court, Vasanth Bangera, Beltangady MLA, programme committee president T Narayana Poojary, and members Jagnmaya and Thejomaya were also present.
