Udupi, Mar 7: A girl has filed a police complaint with the Kaup police station in the district, against a boy who allegedly took part in the engagement ceremony, accepted gifts and then married another girl after invitations of the marriage were printed. The police have registered a case of fraud under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
Prajwala, a resident of Mangalore Bajal has registered the said complaint against Avinash, a native of Bailoor in Badagabettu village here, his parents Manjunath Ganiga and Janaki and Aswini. Prajwala says she was to marry Avinash and the engagement ceremony was held at Katpady Kote in the presence of family elders.
For making preliminary preparations for the marriage and to secure employment, three lac rupees was paid to Avinash by way of presents, she has said, adding that her parents had agreed to pay a further sum of two lac rupees on the day of the marriage.
The marriage was to be held on March 5 at Noor Mahal in Mangalore Kotekar, and invitations had been printed by both sides for the same, she explained. "However, on March 3, the parents of the boy informed us that the boy had been admitted to a hospital, over phone. I was working in Mangalore, and at the behest of the would-be groom, resigned from work. Now, he has fraudulently married another girl," she has said.
