Bangalore, Feb 28: The Karnataka Government on Friday said it has forwarded a proposal to the Centre to rename Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) after the founder of this city, Kempegowda.
"A recommendation to rename the airport as Kempegowda International Airport has been sent to the Centre. Hope this will bring cheer to everyone here," chief minister B S Yeddyurappa announced in the state assembly on Friday February 27.
D K Shivakumar (Cong) quickly responded saying "all our members have already sent a letter to the Union government, demanding that the newly-constructed airport be named after Kempegowda".
A local chieftain, Kempegowda founded Bangalore, which has now grown to be the IT capital of the nation.
The new greenfield airport built in a Joint Venture mode, became operational on March 28 last.
