Udupi, Mar 23: The Auto rickshaw Drivers' and Owners' Association of Manipal filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) against RTO R M Varnekar, who was arrested by the ACB on charges of seeking bribe for repayment of life time vehicle tax. This complaint was filed by the association with the ACB on March 22.
Stickers are being put on auto rickshaws from January 14, 2019 to differentiate them as Udupi City limit (Zone 1) and Outside City limit (Zone 2). Rs 70 per sticker is collected by the RTO through an attender in the office and receipt for the same is not being given, alleged the association in its complaint.
Suspended RTO Varnekar
In 2012, the then deputy commissioner of the district had sent a notification to convert the permit of all auto rickshaw that were registered till January 31, 2012 as city limit permit. Accordingly nearly 10,000 auto rickshaws fall under Zone 1. If Rs 70 is taken per one rickshaw, the total amount would be Rs seven lac. Fitness Certificate is not being issued to auto rickshaws which do not carry the said sticker. The association has urged that inquiry in this regard should also be done in the complaint that is filed with the ACB.
