Mangaluru: Overspeeding bus caused death of 32-year-old policeman

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Mar 20: It is confirmed that the overspeeding of the private express bus was the cause for the accident that took place in Gurpur on Tuesday, March 19, in which Mahesh Lamani (32), son of Channappa Lamani, a resident of Shivashakti Kripa of Devinagar in Belvai lost his life.

Mahesh Lamani was working in the office of the IG in the city.

According to eyewitnesses, the Karkala-Mangaluru route private express bus that was plying towards Mangaluru collided with another express bus that was going to Shivamogga from Mangaluru. But due to the overspeed of the Karkala-Mangaluru express bus, it could not come to a stop and in the process it hit the bike, in which Mahesh Lamani was riding. Due to the result of the impact, bike of Mahesh was thrown to the side of the road and the back wheel of the bus passed over the head and one part of the body, killing him instantly.

Mahesh was wearing a helmet during the accident and it was shred into pieces, which simply gives ample evidence of the speed at which the bus was being driven. The driver, who stopped the bus and ran from the spot, was arrested by the police.

Hundreds of people gathered at the spot of the accident and traffic was affected for more than one hour on the national highway. Bajpe police conducted the spot inspection.

The body of the deceased Mahesh was shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru. Bajpe police have registered a case in this regard.

The private express bus which caused the accident was running at over speed right from Kaikamba as per the information given by the passengers who were inside the bus. The bus was about to hit a tipper truck and all the passengers inside the bus screamed at that time. But the driver still did not reduce the speed and as a result caused an accident and killed the cop Mahesh.

Hundreds of people have lost their lives in the same stretch of the road at Gurpur. The road is narrow in this particular stretch and the road humps are not painted. For the same reason, the vehicle drivers are unable to make out the humps. Road humps were put a few years ago after an Eicher truck killed a boy on the same road. However, the humps that were put with a good intention have become lethal now as they are not painted and also their structure is unscientific.

In addition, there are lots of potholes on the road, which is also causing difficulty for drivers to control the vehicle. Moreover, on both sides of the road there are shops and private houses, which makes this road not fit for heavy vehicle passage. According to a local person, the bus driver might have failed to notice the hump also due to which he might have caused the accident.

In the midst of the demand to widen the NH 169, the occurrence of this accident has increased the rage of the local people.

Express Bus travelling between Mangalore -Moodabidri Route are Death Traps. I made a point that if I see a speeding Bus or Truck, to call Control Room. A drivers Licence should be cancelled immediately when there more than 2 complaints of Traffic Violations.
Mahesh was a good friend of mine and very friendly Cop. May God Help His Family in this time of Tragedy.

Corrupt RTO officials are responsible for this. They take money and give FC to buses without governor. As per SC and govt rule all commercial vehicles has to be fitted with governors which cut their speed to 80 max, but due to bribe the RTO officials give FC without governor. Even bus manufaturors alter the governor to the request of the clients to make the vehicle run faster. This should stop. Ifa bus is found without governor, the passing RTO and the bus company show room should be made responsible.

It was an accident, it is an unplanned unexpected event .

If it's a murder it cannot be an accident.

Police will decide weather it was an accident or murder.

The for local authorities to put stringent speed limits in buses. I lived in Mangalore for 2 decades...all private buses plying inside city, intercity express buses looks uncontrollable leading to lot of accidents...

Time for the District Collector to ensure speed limit governance are fixed in all buses and start government AC buses to kill competition...this will reduce competition among private buses and have a controlled situation.

Have automatic traffic interceptors thorough out the city and highway...thus will reduce speed and corruption.

we dont need bullet train in mangalore , we already have them in the form of express buses.
you can experience a thrill ride for just Rs.50/- . this route was declared highway in 2000 but not even 1 feet is being widened nor there have been any efforts to improve this pathetic road. so many accidents have taken place but no remedial actions being taken.

All expressways and super highways aref or the Nort India only. South India does not exist for New Delhi. The NH 966 is a pathetic by road which the authorities claim to be NH. I wish they rename such roads as National Shame.

What that bugger was doing inside when the bus was over speeding... were there only women inside thee bus..... why couldnt they stop the bus driver when the bus was speeding... why now only blame the driver... its our equal responsibility..why dont anyone in the bus speak up... no one are bothered... they awake only when some one looses life ... after death people will gather and pelt stones at bus or fire it....

What you said is 100% right Jhanavi. If one lady raises voice in the bus, other ladies keep quiet holding their bag tight and watch the fun but never support. I too experienced when my money got robbed and I knew which passengers they were ? No one supported me. Then how you can expect in joining the voices against the drivers? See one of our daiji commentator got beaten up.?? All the passengers should unite and stop the bus. Rest in peace dear brother.. At least your soul may awaken the passengers to seek justice against those drivers.

If any Minister or very influencial person or their family gets killed, then only govt might change the width of the road and paint all speed breaker's and give a commitment to road safety.
Any how the bus was express, it's meant to go in speed.
Govt can Even replace all express buses with Volvo or scania busses so it's more safe for express busses.

@Beowulf mangalore, even there are speed breakers not marked ,drivers who go daily that way they must be knowing what is where.and one who is riding with speed limit ,too doesnt effect from it He /She will ride within limits.I doubt whether that driver was high?had some alcohol ?Otherwise ignoring all speed limits or passengers cry to slodown,he wouldnt race over the bike.So sad ,the policeman was so young, and came under the speeding bus.horror pur.May his soul rest in peace.Hope they have checked drivers blood for alcohol first. Now cancel his licence, put him behind bars.He should pay compansation to police family.Heartfelt sympathys to his family.
