On the background of this, bishops from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have written to the Election Commission of India urging them to given some other alternate date for polling.
In the letter written by bishop Antony Pappusamy, the archbishop of Madurai and president of The Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council, it says, "It will be difficult for the people of Christian faith to vote on April 18 as it is Maundy Thursday and also for the fact that this day is one of the days of the holy week, which is revered most by the Christians. Moreover, Christians employed in government sector and also schools will have to attend the election duty, which will not allow them to attend the obligatory mass. In addition, most of the schools run by the Christian dioceses are situated inside the premises of the church, out of which, considerable number are used as polling stations,”
