Mangaluru, Mar 11: The system of towing the vehicles parked in no parking zones in the city is implemented for quite some time now. In addition to towing, the erring owners of the vehicles are made to pay hefty amounts as fine. But the public are not happy with this development as there is very limited parking space in the city.
Most of the public are saying that the 'Parking' and 'No Parking' zones are not specified by the administration or the police as of now. In this context, it is not right on the part of the traffic police to tow the vehicles and collect huge amounts of fine from the public. The amount of Rs 750 for two-wheelers and Rs 1100 for four wheelers is too much say many and there is a demand to reduce the amount. But the police are expressing their helplessness as this amount is fixed by the government and the same is being collected in the capital city of Bengaluru also.
The number of vehicles in the city is increasing day by day and so is the parking space issue. Except the main K S Rao road in the city, the vehicles are being parked on both sides of the road, mainly in front of the commercial establishments, everywhere in the city. Most of the extended part of the road, which is made of conrete is used for parking of vehicles. In addition, most of the commercial building have offered their basement parking space to commercial establishments, which is forcing the customers to park their vehicles on the side of the road.
Many times raids are conducted against giving the parking space to commercial activities by the building owners. The police have made a list of such commercial establishments and submitted the same to the MCC. But no action is taken by the MCC so far. In the midst of all these issues, the traffic police have started towing of vehicles, which has become headache for the general public.
