Udupi, Mar 11: Indian Dental Association (IDA) Udupi district branch and Women Dental Council jointly organised a self defense workshop 'Swaraksha for Women' for women in the district on the occasion of International Women's Day at Bunt's Bhavana, Brahmavar here on Sunday, March 10.
The workshop was presented by resource persons Shobhalatha and Karthik S Kateel of Swaraksha for Women Trust. They depicted various self-defense techniques.
Sheela K Shetty, vice president of zilla panchayat Udupi inaugurated the programme and said, “Today, the so called saviours (male) are becoming demons. So in those circumstances, women should take form of Goddess Kaali to protect herself. Courage is a tool for facing problems. A woman is courageous right from her birth. Her life's experiences teach her everything to become stronger. Nail and teeth are the two weapons when it comes to self defense. Indian women are symbol of culture. Women have all ability to do impossible things.”
Janet Barboza president, Catholic Stree Sangatane, Udupi district appreciated for organising a meaningful programme and said that it was time to think about women safety seriously.
K C Poovaiah, circle inspector, Brahmavar spoke on awareness over road safety, and using mobile phones and self defense. “There is wrong perception about the department and lack of knowledge about the system. A new beat system is started in every police station limit. People should make use of police station. Let us keep direct contact with the district superintendent of police or nearby police stations. According to the instruction of DG, a receptionist will be appointed to welcome complainants like customer care and they will receive reply through message. This is how the police department wants to build friendly relationship with public.”
He further shared informative knowledge about the proceedings of police department and he urged make use of benefits.
The IDA Udupi branch has a target of distributing 5,000 sanitary pads. They were symbolically distributed to few women associations in the programme.
Dr Manoj said, “Swacch mukha (face) and Swaccha deha (body) drive is organised by IDA. Our core purpose is to prevent cancer by undertaking preventive measures.”
Dr Deepa D'lima, representative to WDC, IDA Udupi district branch, presided over the function.

Dr Syed Mohammed Faiz, honourary secretary, IDA Udupi district branch, Dr Sudhir N Rao, honourary treasurer, IDA Udupi district branch was present on the occasion.

Dr Saritha Upadhyaya and Dr Fouziya compered the programme.
Students of Dhanwanthari Nursing College and members of Women's Dental Council and Indian Dental Association, Udupi District Branch were present.
