Kaup, Mar 9: After a car that was driven haphazardly hit a scooty at Shirva on Thursday March 7 evening, a woman was killed. The deceased was Prema Acharya (48) from Mattar in Shirva. Her husband, Ramesh Acharya, sustained serious injuries.

The accident happened in front of the engineering college at Bantakal. The car which was moving from the direction of Shirva towards Shankarapura hit the scooty at high speed. The couple were smashed against the road in this accident. The couple was rushed to Manipal hospital. But Prema breathed her last at the hospital on Friday.

The youth who was responsible for the accident fled from the scene. The car, after hitting the scooty, plunged into the roadside drain.  As such, it narrowly avoided hitting the electric pole.

Shirva police, who have registered a case, have confiscated the car.

Ramesh Acharya works abroad and had come to his hometown by availing two months holiday. The couple had visited Kunjarugiri Pajaka temple in their son's scooty and were returning after visiting Prema's parental home when the car hit their two-wheeler. Prema is survived by two sons and a daughter.

It is sad and unfortunate that a woman lost her life and husband is fight for his life in a scooter accident caused by a negligent car driver who fled away from the scene. May the soul of Prema RIP and wish a speedy recovery of her husband Ramesh Acharia. He came to India from a foreign country to enjoy his vacation with his family and loved ones and it ended up in a sad note. I feel sorry for his children. The driver of the car should be caught as soon as possible and punished to the maximum extent of law.

Totally agree with you. Only in Karnataka do you have reckless driving with cent per cent casualty. If you were to run down through the archives here on Daijiworld, that would average a casualty per day. Surprises of all surprises ... even in a vast expanse of metropolis like Bombay or New Delhi for that matter the casualty is miniscule compared to coastal Karnataka - mind you, It is not even a metropolis. Imagine then how one has rowdies driving on the roads as if the road belongs to their father or ....Don't know how this nuisance should be tackled. Too many precious lives lost - either due to their own negligence or somebody else becoming a scapegoat.

People riding 2 wheelers have to be extremely careful. Anticipating the movement of other drivers and pedestrians is absolutely essential.

    Chetan,

Carefull or not, if you are riding a two wheeler the probability that you will meet in an accident is very high. also even in that accident, the probability that it will be a fatal one is also high.
