Kaup, Mar 8: A leopard which had strayed into a residential area at Palame within Shirva gram panchayat limits and got trapped in a well after falling into it, was rescued by forest officials on Thursday March 7.
The leopard appears to have come there to hunt dogs. In the early hours on Thursday, it accidentally fell into a well attached to the house of Pius Moris. Immediately the family contacted forest officials who came there and rescued the animal with the help of local people.
The leopard was roaring angrily from inside the well. It had clung to a support just above the water level. The officials initially sealed the opening of the well with a net and then lowered a trap. They succeeded in making the leopard enter the trap after which it was brought up.
The forest officials said that the leopard was subjected to medical examination after which it was released into the Kollur protected forest. Range forest officer, Clifford Lobo, guided the operation which was conducted under the leadership of deputy range forest officers of Padubidri range, Nagesh Billava and Jayaram.
As there was water in the well, the animal escaped without any injuries.
