Udupi, Mar 6: Udupi human rights foundation president Ravindranath Shanbhog on Tuesday, March 6 at a press conference gave details of a case where a husband physically assaulted his wife, registered a case of cheque bounce against her and tried to send her to jail.

Sharif Ali (32), son of Moosa Abdul Khader, resident of Udupi Karamballi village is the alleged accused in the case. He had married Tellichery, Kerala resident Jamsheena (28) in 2013. He presented no demands till the engagement but obtained 240 grams gold worth Rs 8 lac as dowry during the wedding. Though unemployed, he had said that he is a driver. He had snatched the gold from his wife within two months of the marriage. He sold the gold and bought a lorry for transport of fish. But he sold the lorry within a few days. He got addicted to alcohol and used to beat Jamsheena harassing her to bring more money from her parents. He used to send his wife to her parents every three months and obtained about Rs six lac. He had also received money from his in laws to go to gulf in 2014 and 2017. He had returned home without working properly in the gulf.



 

While Sharif was cruelly harassing Jamsheena, his mother Haleenabi had borrowed huge loans in the name of Jamsheena from Muthoot finance, Sriram finance and fishermen cooperative societies. Sharif who had come home had also snatched Rs 35 thousand received by Jamsheena from insurance company.

Recently Sharif had obtained by force signatures for Vijaya bank chques from Jamsheena. He has got the cheques worth several lacs deposited through his friends threatening that he will send her to jail if the amount is not paid.

Jamsheena who became sick due to pressure of such incidents has said that she will complain with the help of human rights foundation to SP and deputy commissioner alleging criminal conspiracy, dowry harassment, physical violence and illegal bank transactions.

Jamsheena’s mother Safiya, elder sister Salma, brother in law Rafik, uncle Nasir and Samman counseling center’s Salvuddin were present in the news conference.

“Sharif has another eleven cheques signed by Jamsheena. She is likely to land in jail is those are presented in the bank. Therefore, nobody should accept them. She should be provided security,” said Ravindranath Shanbhog.

    Unfortunatley dowry has became a part of marriages in muslim community.Sadly, very few clerics speak against this ruthless system.A marriage of a girl child has become a challnege for a middle class and lower income people.If this trend continues , definitly there will be drastical decrese in the birth of girl chid.
