Mangaluru: Give way to pedestrians at zebra cross or pay fine - Commissioner Patil

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 4: After assuming the office as commissioner of police of the city just 10 days ago, Sandeep Patil is coming out with rules and regulations that will make life easier for the citizens living in the city.

In one more similar action, Sandeep Patil has informed that strict action will be taken against vehicles stopping on the zebra crossing at signal when the red light is on. It is noticed that most of the vehicle drivers and riders in the city park their vehicles on the zebra crossing lines, causing inconvenience to the pedestrians, who are forced to cross the road in a zig zag manner with great difficulty. This becomes more difficult for women and elderly people.

It can be noted that, work on putting zebra crossing signals took place intensively during late last night in areas like Nantoor, KPT and other important places where traffic conjunction is high.

Sandeep Patil is 2004 IPS batch officer hailing from Bidar. He completed his education in Bengaluru. He has served as SP of Ballari, Kodagu, Davanagere and Belagavi. He also served as DCP of Mangaluru North and Central, SP intelligence Bengaluru, DIG KSRP and DIG CAR, before taking charge as police commissioner of Mangaluru.

Deart Mr. Sandeep patil ji, in the entire history of Mangalore you are the first one to pronounce zebra crossing is meant for for walking for pedestrians . We all thought it is the place for stopping vehicles at the red signal after crossing all the 4 wheels over the markings! Kindly see that it is implemented very strictly! Wish you luck

public is with CP. But I appreciate you ensure the right infrastructure is in place. then only ask public to follow. Lot of places there are zebra cross lines are not visible at all. Also who ever breaks the law penalize them instantly. or else it will open up for others to follow. For example I leave space for zebra cross and stop away , immediately as auto or car comes and stand in front of me blocking my way... those things should not happen. then the whole purpose goes off. such elements should be penalized immediately. any ways, good move by CP... let's all support him and ensure mangalore becomes a good city along with smart city.

Very good decision by Commissioner! kindly introduce a ‘black point’ system in Karnataka. the points should be given along with fines for a whole manner of traffic offenses, like for speed drive, drink and drive etc. If 24 points are gained in one year then the driving license should be revoked for at least three months.

It is obvious that Mr. Sanjiv Patil has taken up his responsibilities seriously. Where signals are not installed even then the pedestrians have a right of way at Zebra crossings. However the zebra crossings at several places are wiped away and the municipality should ensure that these are restored. That apart to control speed,s humps are built in several places but these are not visible and here too it is necessary that these are prominently marked.

It would also be a good idea for our commissioner of Police to depute responsible persons to give talks to the children in schools and educate them to follow rules.

If this trend continues, slowly Indian driver license will be valid internationally..
Entering an opposite lane , proper use of rear view mirrors, equal distance between 2 vehicle so as to give enough response time in case of a sudden halt from front, follow zebra crossing lines. Lane driving method, Riding with safety gear on 2 wheelers ie helmet etc...
Then our country people need not take extra driving lessons in Europe or Middle East when they go for jobs there..

Very good decision by the Commissioner Patil. Require traffic police near KSRTC bus station junction, at Canara/beasant college junction, road connecting to jail road, also at St. Aloysius Primary school junction.
New drivers should be given a class room orientation about the rules and responsibility. It may help the young new drivers.

I really cannot understand why the earlier COP could not ask for zebra crossing was he not qualified for the post. Where are the signals in town ? We have two or three signals in the city of Mangalore.
We find vehicles parked on the zebra crossing and buses stop on the zebra crossings. Nothing is done the law breakers.
Since a few months the speed breakers and zebra crossings have all disappeared.

Zebra crossing is a good move. At the same time SP should see that people do not cross the road where he wants, If they find people crossing then they too be fined. SP should make a round from Kankanady to AB Shetty circle and from Lalbagh to AB Shetty’ circle and find how the pedestrians are crossing the road and how motorists find difficulty in driving. Put permanent barricades in between the road where pedestrians will not be able to cross and made to cross on the Zebra crossing only.

Rehan Mangalore why should the pedestrians be fined in Mangalore there are no proper footpaths and vehicles are parked hazardously and hence forcing pedestrians to cross the road anywhere where he/she likes to. Sometimes were there are footpaths vehicles are parked and the pedestrians are forced to cross or walk on the road.

If our Traffic department punishes the offenders and seizes the vehicles for few days, then only our people will come to know the Traffic rules especially Rickshaw and Bus. I hope our new Commissioner of Police will take action at the right time.

Not only Zebra crossing, they don't know any rules, because most of them learn from driving schools and some of the driving school instructors on don't know proper rules and regulations. They teach only to shift gears, steering controls but never talk about traffic rules.

Zebra crossing OK, what about reflective marking on humps, what a out police driving while on mobile phone, what about auto's and buses stopping in the middle of the road, what about potholes in concrete roads.
Don't do cosmetic surgury just for people know there is a commissioner.

Drivers should know to give utmost respect to Human Beings as life cannot be replaced. Whenever one sees a Pedestrain waiting at a Zebra Crossing, Vehicle Drivers should STOP be default irrespective of whether there is a signal there or not / or signal is red or not.

Do you mean all persons in USA are insane? For your information pedestrians have right of way at intersections and zebra crossings and vehicles have to stop if they see a pedestrian crossing. Otherwise you will be pulled over by the police and ticketed. If you hit a pedestrian thats a different story. You will be ruined fir life.
