Pakistan's 'goodwill gesture' on IAF pilot delayed by hours

New Delhi, Mar 1(IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's "goodwill gesture" of releasing Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman turned out to be an ordeal of several hours on Friday.

While Khan made the announcement on Thursday that Wing Commander Abhinandan would be released today, the wait for the return of the IAF pilot kept getting longer and did not happen till 8.50 pm.

The Pakistani authorities got all the paper work completed to hand over the pilot to Indian High Commission officials, but the pilot's return was awaited by hubndreds of Indian visitors who have thronged the border transit point.

There were reports that Abhinandan was kept at Batapur cantonment, located about 10 km from Wagah, where his medical and immigration formalities were being completed.

Scores of people, who had gathered at Attari to welcome the IAF pilot back, continued to stay put despite the delay, darkness and even the rain and cold weather.

Since Friday morning, it was expected that Abhinandan would be released by Pakistan anytime after noon.

The release time was pushed back several times and, for unexplained reasons, the return of the pilot kept getting longer.

Authorities in India - the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Border Security Force (BSF), Indian Air Force (IAF), or anyone else -- had no idea why Pakistan was delaying the pilot's return.

The Wing Commander was in Pakistani captivity since early on Wednesday.

Senior IAF officers, along with those from Army, BSF, Punjab Police and district authorities in Amritsar had arrived before 4 pm at the Attari joint check post complex.

There were reports that Abhinandan's parents were also at Attari to welcome their son back.

The IAF pilot was earlier accompanied by officials of the Indian High Commission led by Group Captain J.D. Kurian. The handing over process was delayed by the Pakistan side for unexplained reasons.

Abhinandan was captured in Pakistan on Wednesday (Feb 27) after his MiG-21 Bison fighter jet was shot down during a dogfight near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Thursday that the captured IAF pilot will be freed as a "goodwill gesture" after New Delhi sought his unconditional and immediate release.

Earlier update:

Wing Commander Abhinandan reaches Wagah

Attari (Punjab), March 1 (IANS): Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman reached the Pakistani side of the border on Friday evening from Lahore ahead of his release from Pakistani captivity.

Informed sources said that Abhinandan was accompanied by Indian High Commission officials from Islamabad. He will enter India after completing formalities at Wagah.

The IAF pilot was captured in Pakistan on February 27 after his MIG-21 Bison fighter jet was shot down during a dogfight near the Line of Control (LoC).

Congratulations IAF pilot Abhinandan. You made Indians proud. With MIG 21, you have knocked down F 16 of enemy Pakistanees freighter flight.

In the entire scenario, the most affected, sad person is our honourable PM Modijee. Now he cannot harp to the world about the release of our IAF pilot caught by Pakistan for his election gain. This issue is closed and for election, our PM Modijee has to find one more new burning issue.

According to the Geneva Conventions, to allow video clips of him being quizzed to slip into the irresponsible hands of the social media is not permissible. The clip many of us received in India did a disservice to his captors and it was bad form to release it.
On the flip side, Pakistan should smile that the perennially callous Indian anchors have requisitioned the International Committee of the Red Cross’s (ICRC) involvement in the captured pilot’s treatment in Pakistan. There is a sudden clamor for the Geneva Conventions to be applied, which allow international humanitarian laws to kick in.
Why should Pakistan be happy to send the IAF pilot back promptly? Because the Kashmiri people would take heart from the fact that ultra-nationalist Indians are finally putting their faith in the professional neutrality of an international organization they shunned in Kashmir, the northeast and elsewhere.
Our New Love for the Geneva Conventions Should Extend to All Situations which shouted by paid journalism to social media ever since Wing Commander Abhinandan has taken captive.
It could have a salutary effect on those who didn’t believe in human rights until now, but seem to have changed their mind for good.

But his release made Pakistan won diplomatically. Will India reciprocate the Geneva Convention is Kashmir, Northeast and elsewhere of India?
Welcome back a great Dravidian hero who has shown exemplary bravery even blindfolded.

Your typical Pro Paki comments are misleading readers here. Pak was scared rite from initial strikes around 80 kms inside their border. Ghar mein ghuske maara like a bollywood film saying. Pak was isloated and had no backing from any countries, not even from their Muslim neighbouring countries, China too looked the other way. They were doomed. When this pilot was caught they wanted to negotiate but India just said he has to be released unconditionally. He was released only under the Genenva Convention not any 'peace broking' . Imran had called Modi couple of times and the phone was not picked. Eventually Abhi was released in a day. Its not a diplomatic victory for them, Their airspace is closed till Mar 4, total black out in many places and emergency situation in Karachi. Yeah if they try to meddle with Kashmir , they will screxed in the right place. But I still cannot belive that MMS Govt had kept quiet when 167 people died in Mumba due to pak terrorists.

How long will you suffer from those Pak people. We want like Indira Gandhi to fight and close Pak history. Even Afghan Iraq Kuwait Iran all these countries were under terror activities as similar as Pak. I guess there are more than 50% terrorist in Pak. So better the world countries must get together and tackle Pak in a fine way. The world has suffered enough from the terror activities. Anyway we Indians hv no peace. If no terror, religion caste and politics is also as similar as to it.

I appreciate Mr. Imran Khan, the PM of Pakistan for honouring his word and sending the my Indian IAF pilot Abhinandan less than 3 days. One should hear the latest speech in youtube addressed in Pakistan parliament. In spite of Pakistan locals are rogues, he has seen that our pilot Abhinandan is unharmed after the Pakistan military caught him from the local captives.

    Prashant,

Two things are very important here.

Yes, you can enjoy ..but for a while.

At the same time, spare a thought to those brave-heart 45 + soldiers of Pulwama terror attacks killed by Pakistan. Don't forget them. For without that tragedy, Abhinandan and our daring forces would NEVER have got an opportunity to venture and strike into Pakistan's territory to cleanse out the terrorist camps. Such an opportunity is indeed rarely available. We got a lot of motivation from America (from the Osama Bin Laden captivity episode) to fulfil our dreams too and proved that we are not inferior to safeguard our country from external forces wanting to break up the fabric of India.

No political party - not even Narendra Modi for that matter need to add feather to their caps for such an encouragement or for the release of Abhinandan - the country should give full credit to our Army who are the true heroes of our country and every citizen having the love and affection to our motherland.

Symbol of peace.of this man. Pakistan must have got so much pressure from middle eastern royals to relieve this soldier otherwise 100% modiji will go for war with Pakistan. Pakis were scared for sure their country bankrupted and war will make it worse for them. India has nothing to lose provided that our political parties join hands to destroy such attacks and terrorists pop in our India.
