Beltangady, Feb 7: Lokayukta police arrested town police sub-inspector M C Rame Gowda and a police constable here on Friday February 6, on charges of accepting bribe.
Lokayukta police had undertaken this operation after a municipal employee Ummer Farooq, a resident of Gerukatte tipped them off. The accused were produced before the judge at his residence on Friday February 6 evening, who remanded them for judicial custody.
Ummer Farooq and his wife had strained relations. Hence, his wife complained to the town police here that Ummer Farooq has been harassing their daughter. The town police were believed to be mentally harassing Ummer Farooq, with the demands of money over the phone and visiting him personally at his house. Town police sub-inspector M C Rame Gowda seemed to have said Ummer Farooq a week ago that they would cover up the case if he hands over a bribe of Rs 1,000. Ummer Farooq quietly informed the matter with Lokayukta police who laid the trap by providing a tape recorder to Ummer Farooq. The entire conversation between the sub-inspector Rame Gowda and Ummer Farooq were thus recorded to prove the case.
As per the arrangement, Ummer Farooq arrived at the town police station with Rs 2,000 cash on Friday February 6 evening. Lokayukta police then caught Mahesh red-handed while accepting bribe. When enquired, he said that he had been instructed by sub-inspector Rame Gowda. Sub-inspector who was residing in a nearby lodge was immediately summoned and was taken to custody.
Lokayukta SP Y Dharmaraj, DySP Dr Prabhudev B Mane, inspector Uday Nayak and sub-inspector Belliaappa were involved in this operation.
