Shivamogga, Feb 27: A pair of tusks which had mysteriously gone missing from the office of the district superintendent of police (SP) here a few years back, have made mysterious re-appearance in the same office. This incident has given rise to lot of doubts and suspicions in the minds of the people.
Additional superintendent of police here, Muttu Raj, who gave information about the finding of these tusks to media persons on Tuesday February 26, said that after the new SP, M Ashwini, took over charge recently, she had asked the room where old documents and registers were maintained, to be cleaned up. The cleaning operation began on Monday. "One of the cleaning staff, Gowramma, found these tusks wrapped in paper. As soon as she informed us about it, the tusks have been taken into possession. The criminal investigation department officials have been informed about the recovery. They will take further steps as deemed necessary," he explained.
The previous SP, who had found that the tusks had gone missing sometime after 2014, had ordered for a probe. After preliminary inquiry, a case in this connection had been registered during last year at Doddapete police station. This complaint was registered by A B Srinath, stenographer in the confidential section of SP office.
Thereafter, state additional director general of police (law and order), Kamal Pant, had visited the office and tried to hasten the probe. As a part of the operation, two constables were suspended for dereliction of duty. But as there was no progress in investigation, the case was handed over to criminal investigation department.
It had always been a practice in the SP office to click photographs of the new SP, whenever handing over charge took place, in front of these decorated tusks. When Murugan took over charge, these tusks were there but they went missing sometime later. Now everyone is curious to know who stole these tusks which had been kept over a decorated wooden pedestal, which added to the look of the office, and who kept them back in the office.
