Dubai, Feb 26: SMMC (St Mary’s Mangalorean Community) organised a day-long indoor cricket and throw ball tournament ‘SMMC Sports 2019’ on February 22. As many as 40 Catholic and Christian teams all over from UAE participated in the event at United Pro Sports, Al Quoz. Catholic Boys in cricket and Konkans Dubai in both throw ball (women) and throw ball (men) were declared as winners.
As various sports team members arrived in the morning, registration process was carried out by efficient SMMC volunteers. Dubai’s cheerful and versatile comperes Vernon D’Souza and Lanita Noronha initiated the opening ceremony with the introduction of SMMC. Jerina Lewis, SMMC coordinator, rendered the welcome address. SMMC’s new spiritual director Fr Denis Saldanha, recited the opening prayer and conveyed the message to enjoy the tournament and to play with true team spirit. Then tournament was officially declared open by Fr Deni Saldanha.
SMMC’s core member Loyson DCunha carried out the oath taking ceremony. United Pro Sports briefed to the participating teams about the rules and regulations for the tournament. As per the fixtures stated earlier in the tournament format, initial matches for cricket and throw ball started simultaneously in five courts.
Throughout the day, supporters, guests and prominent members of Konkan community visited the venue and were kept engrossed in the spectacular matches between various teams of cricket (men), throw ball (Men) and throw ball (women).
In the evening, vivacious emcees Alwyn Stephen and Sweeny D’Souza started the award presentation ceremony, felicitation of sponsors and supporters of event SMMC core member Rudolf Sanctis thanked all the sponsors, participating teams, United Pro authorities, volunteers, comperes and all those contributed to the success of the event.
Sponsors of event were felicitated with mementos by the spiritual director Fr Denis Saldanha. Gold sponsor of the event was Martin Aranha, Globelink West Star Shipping; Silver Sponsor was Sydney Lewis, S J Lewis Engineering Consultants Dubai.
