Udupi, Feb 25: An awareness programme on youth and social media was organized by the Yuva Aayog of St Lawrence parish Moodubelle on Sunday, February 24 as part of the year of the youth activity.
Fr Lawrence Cutinha, assistant parish priest and ICYM director Udupi deanery presided over the function. Fr Royson Fernandes, assistant parish priest, St John the Evangelist Church, Shankerpura and PRO of Udupi diocese was the resource person. Around 70 youths participated in the programme.
The programme began with prayer song by Edna and group. Vilton Dsouza, the president of the Yuva Aayog Moodubelle parish and also the ICYM president Udupi deanery welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering. Fr Lawrence Cutinha congratulated the youth for coming forward in organizing the event and also emphasized the need to be aware of the effect of social media in our lives. He thanked the resource person for accepting the invitation and also appreciated his work in the diocese as a PRO and editor of the diocesan magazine Uzvaad.
Fr Royson in his address highlighted importance of media in day today lives. He mentioned the various types of media we use and how it helps to enhance our communication in the present day. He also briefed that internet has provided lot of better opportunities for enhancing the quick transfer of information through various social media sites. However, he also cautioned the young youths how it can be misused and its effects on our lives. In the present day due to fast moving of
information technology the youth needs to make use of their time appropriately in making use of the social media sites. He emphasized that as individual’s are curious to know about lot of information and it is freely available,but one need to be cautious about getting addicted and preventing from becoming victims of the overuse of social networking sites. Finally in conclusion of his session he called upon the youth to remember the three things in making use of social media in their day to day lives. Is it really useful, is the information true and is it good to be used. He mentioned only when there is self-control in using social media and networking sites it makes a benefit than disaster.
Viton Dsouza ICYM deanery president, Joswin Dmello, president ICYM Moodubelle unit, Deril Dsa, YCS deanery president and NEXCO nominated member, , Victor and Cony D’Souza, ‘couple for the youth’ nominated from St Lawrence Parish MoodubelleICYM and YCS animators Valerian Noronha, Anitha Alva, Shalini Lobo, and Dr Judith Lobo were also present for the programme.
