Mangaluru, Feb 24: The sixth additional district and sessions court here, through a verdict delivered on Saturday February 23, sentenced notorious serial killer, Cyanide Mohan, to remain in prison till his last breath. This judgement relates to the seventh case against Mohan for murdering a girl from Mani.
Mohan had introduced himself to a 25-year-old woman from Mani at Wenlock Hospital as Sadanand Naik. He claimed himself to be belonging to the same caste as hers, and promised to marry her. He also told the lady's mother that he was employed in the department of agriculture at Karkala and that he had planned to marry her daughter. The lady's mother asked him to visit her at her home.
He earned the trust of the lady thereafter, succeeded in convincing her to fall in love with him, and asked her to reach Puttur bus stand on January 2, 2008 duly wearing all her jewellery. Both then went to Madikeri where Mohan hired a room in the name of Anand Naik. That night he raped the lady.
On January 3, he asked the lady to keep her ornaments and cash in the hotel room and invited her to accompany him on a stroll. He escorted her to Madikeri bus stand, where he handed over cyanide tablet, duly lying to her that it was a contraceptive. She consumed the tablet inside the toilet there and collapsed to her death. The police who found the body, conducted postmortem on January 4 and registered case of unnatural death.
Mohan in the meanwhile, went to the room, took away cash and ornaments belonging to the lady, and escaped. A few days later, he called a youth staying in the neighbourhood of the girl over phone, sought to speak to the younger sister of the victim, and told her that he had married the lady and that they would be returning in a week. He asked the family not to search for them. A missing case was registered in Vittal police station.
During the period the police were investigating a case pertaining to the murder of a girl from Barimaru during 2008, Mohan confessed to the police about having killed a lady from Mani. The then assistant superintendent of police, Chandragupta, recorded his statement, and inspector, Nanjunde Gowda, who investigated the case, handed over the same to Corps of Detectives, who filed charge sheet in the court.
Judge of the court, D T Puttaranga Swamy, who examined 40 witnesses, 64 documents and 38 evidences, passed a judgement as above. Public prosecutor, Judith O M Crasta, had represented the prosecution in the case. Mohan has also been awarded different jail terms and fine along with the imprisonment for life as per section 302 of Indian Penal Code.
