Farmers in Kolar decide not to export tomatoes to Pakistan

Daijiworld Media Network - Kolar (MS)

Kolar, Feb 23: The central government has increased the import tax on products of Pakistan to 200% after the Pulwama terror attack. In Karnataka also the farmers are showing solidarity with the nation by not exporting the tomatoes to the neighbouring enemy.

The farmers of the district were exporting around 200 tonnes of tomato to Pakistan since many years. However, since many days tomatoes are not being exported to Pakistan from India, especially from Kolar. Because of this Pakistan is facing shortage of tomatoes. The price of tomato has crossed more than Rs 300 per kilo in Pakistan. The direct reason for this price hike is the non-exporting of tomatoes from Kolar.

After the Pulwama attack, India has stopped the export of all kinds of fruits and vegetables to Pakistan. Srinivas, a vegetable vendor of the main market of the district says, "Even if we incur loss, we do not mind. We will not sell even rotten tomatoes to them for any reason."

Due to the inclement weather, the rate of vegetables have sky rocketed in India itself. The agriculture produce market of the district has the pride of being the second largest market in Asia. The tomatoes of Kolar are exported to other states of the country and to foreign counties like Afghanistan and Japan. However, after the Pulwama attack things have changed when it comes to exporting fruits and vegetables to Pakistan.

Tomato is being grown over an area of 1500 hectares in the district. So this district is considered as the main supplier of tomatoes. The farmers, vendors and wholesale businessmen have taken an unilateral decision not to export tomatoes to Pakistan, even if it means loss to them.

On the whole, the stance taken by the farming fraternity of the district clearly shows that there is an inseparable relation between the farmers, who are the backbone of country's economy and the soldiers who put their lives on risk to guard the nation from enemies.

It is different matter that Wagah border is now closed and withdrawal of MFN means, tomatoes through wagah will come at a premium price. However, I suggest the farmers should export tomatoes to Pakistan at a premium. They would buy anyway from elsewhere at a premium. If at all add a Phulwam levy and make Pakistanis pay through their nose and make them aware every time they cut a tomato.
Electricity and other basic necessities are anyway costly for ordinary man in Pakistan. Next time they should shun JEM and all the UDdawas and worry about what is cooking in their kitchen.

    Dear JNB-Mangalore-Mumbai,
You question is apt. Answer is equally straight forward. If Punjab on the Indian side can be bread basket of India, why not on the Pakistani side of Punjab which has less mouths to feed? Farmers there are surrendering their kids for the cause of JEM and LT in return for cash funded by Pak Military. Even fertilizers (Fauji Fertilizers) are manufactured and price controlled by Military. It is not a easy choice to be a farmer in Pakistan.
This country got the bad habit of doing nothing and rely on cheap dollars they got in return for favors to US. They would need everything under the earth to feed them.

I am of the opinion that, though Indira Gandhi was toughest with Pakistan,
AB Vajapayee was most effective in handling Pakistan!
He was very sincere in extending hand of peace, in explaining the benefits of peace in the region, He always gave scope for dialogue and peace.
At the same time, showed Iron fists for not understanding humane language and to show that peace initiative is not a weakness.
Very matured sttemanship,he never had to regret most of his actions!

Good decision of farmers. Why should we feed our enemies who kill our soldiers ,and our country men suffer here?Donate these tomatoes to our country men who guard us.or sell to others and pay this money to our soldiers children.let them feel the pain to what they did to our country.and our brave men.

Unless there is some alternative decision to support price this hasty decision will only hurt the farmers of Karnataka in the long run. They might sell the stock for the negligible amount for food processing unit and bare the burden.
Recently a farmer from Maharashtra has sent Rs 6 after selling 2,657 kg onions to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to mark his protest against crashing prices of onions.
After European embargo, Turkey is looking for an alternate market for its exports. It has already agreed to fill the shortfall. In the other hand, Iran, China will fill the vacuum.
In the long run, it will only hurt our farmers unless they are not paid by the minimum support price.
