300 cars gutted in fire near Bengaluru air show

Updated

Bengaluru, Feb 23 (IANS):

A fire in the parking lot in front of the Yelahanka air base in Bengaluru, where the Aero India show is underway, gutted about 300 cars on Saturday, police said. No casualties were reported.

"The blaze is likely to have been caused due to dry grass catching fire aided by high velocity winds," Director General of Police for Fire and Emergency Services M.N. Reddi told.

Reddi told..

The fire, which began around 12 noon, quickly burnt down the vehicles parked by visitors and public attending the show at the Indian Air Force base in the northern outskirts of the city.

Thick black smoke was billowing in the sky soon after the air display of aircraft, which began at 10 a.m., came to an end.

The fire personnel controlled the blaze by creating a gap by removing adjacent cars, Reddi said.

"In all, 300 cars were burnt. Fire is fully extinguished now," he tweeted later.

The exact reason for the fire, however, could not be ascertained.

"Details of damage to vehicles is being ascertained. A court of inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of fire," said a statement from the Ministry of Defence here.

A total of 12 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire, the statement said.

The aerial display of aircraft in the afternoon, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., continued according to schedule.

Several of the visitors, however, left the venue even as the air display was on in the afternoon, fearing their vehicles were among the ones damaged.

"We had parked our car in the parking lot opposite to the air base. An announcement in the air display area by the air show organisers at 12.30 p.m. only said it was a small fire, but did not mention about the cars catching fire," Shashi Kumar, a city-based engineer visiting the expo, told IANS.

Bengaluru: Fire at Aero India show - over 20 vehicles gutted

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 23 : A fire broke out in the general parking area of the Aero India at the front of Yelahanka Air Base here on Saturday, February 23.

The bellowing smoke was spotted at the end of the morning aerobatics display and caused mild panic.

Earlier on Tuesday, just a day before the commencement of the show, a plane had crashed during rehearsals.

Defence officials however attempted to keep the calm at the Air Base. “The fire and smoke you see that from normal domestic fire of dried leaves. There is nothing to worry,” said repeated announcements during the show that has seen the largest number of visitors so far.

Ten fire tenders have been deputed, as per last report.

Fire Department officials said that as many as 80 vehicles caught fire. 20 out of them were gutted. say some reports.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but is believed to have started as a ground fire from the dried grass in the parking lot.

Extremely poor planning. Such an air show should have proper planning whether with Fire Dep Car Parking or Crowd control. It is a mess and irresponsiblility on the part of management.
Time to accept responsibility and learn for the future planning.

The organizers should have applied water on the parking lot. It would not have led to such an incident. This incident is sudden and unfortunate.

You said it right. We provide technology to the world but at home we act like idiots. Surprises that being an airshow that at a operational air force base, there was no security and emergency fire control equipment. These things only happen in India.

@shagrid mangalore, there is noneed of a cigarette.can also happen. But where extreem dry weather is existing and dry gras nearby is,sometimes automatically dry gras can start ot burn. Many places it happened like inAmerica or even in spain etc.with hotsunrays fall on dry gras ,nearby some cars heat is enough.Only organizers didnt think of some fire ware suppose some aeroplanes have a accident and crash on floor, can also such fire ball exist .such things should be thought and all measures to help must be ready including ambulance ,and firstaid team.sad nothing of that.Otherside quite possible some bad boys had a idea to burn cars?otherwise how can all cars in a raw start burning?

    Hi,

Initially they wanted to change the location of Aero Show, then backed out because of the hue & cry of state government. Now this happened, either state was not fully involved in preparations or something seriously wrong
