Mangalore, Feb 3: On the occasion of World Cancer Awareness Day that falls on Wednesday February 4, KMC Hospital Ambedkar (Jyoti) Circle here will offer 50 percent discount on mammography and 20 percent discount on KMC cancer screening (health check) package during the period from Wednesday February 4 to Friday February 6, stated their press release.
Cancer has become one of the ten leading causes of deaths in India. There are more than 100 types of cancers and any part of the body can be affected by it. As per estimates, nearly two million cancer cases are reported at any given point of time. Cancers of oral and lungs (tobacco-related cancers) in males, cervix and breast in females account for over 50 percent of all cancer deaths in India.
Over 40 percent of all types of cancer can be prevented mainly by staying away from tobacco consumption, having a healthy diet, being physically active and preventing infections that may cause cancer. Some of the most common cancers, including breast, colorectal and cervical cancer are curable if detected early. More than 70 percent of all cancers in India are found when the disease is so advanced that treatment is much less affective. Even with late cancer, pain can be reduced, progression of the cancer can be slowed, and patients and their families can be helped to cope with the disease in a better way.
KMC Hospital Chief Operating Officer (COO) Dr Sunil Deshpande said that increasing public awareness has resulted in more people getting regular cancer screenings, and practicing healthy lifestyles to reduce their risk. He has urged the public to take maximum advantage of this opportunity offered by the hospital.
