Mangaluru, Feb 21: Most people yearn to get settled in life at the age of retirement, either through good amount of savings in financial institutions or by the support of their children. It is the time to rest and enjoy one's life, with the dreams fulfilled. But being a kidney cancer patient, stricken by poverty, childless Dolphy Machado is seeking help from generous and kind-hearted donors.
Dolphy Machado, a resident of Bondel on the outskirts of the city, has had a spate of bad fortune that has left him dependent on the generosity of others.
60-years-old Dolphy Machado is married but he does not have the gift of children. He experienced illness for the first time in the last year when he was working at a construction site. He went to a local doctor immediately for consultation and came to know that he had major health issue. Then he went to KMC hospital for health check up, where the doctor told him that he is suffering from kidney cancer. The news of illness put Dolphy and his wife to miserable condition. They do not have children to help them financially and morally.
As a medication for his ailment, the doctor suggested him to take a tablet by the name SUTENT, the cost of which amounts to Rs 1.5 lac per month and he needs to take this tablet for 10 continuous months in order to stay alive. But being a coolie worker at construction site, Dolphy and his wife were not able to manage the astronomical sum. They returned from hospital to their rented house situated at Bondel Junction and now they are passing days in misery and sorrow. It is also learnt that they are struggling to have meal for even once in a day.
The annual cost of treatment would be Rs 18 lac. Apart from the treatment cost, the family needs to pay rent for the house and also need food to eat. As Dolphy comes from poor socio-economic background, financial assistance by Good Samaritans will help him immensely in continuing medical care, states a letter from his doctor Dr Sanyo P D'Souza, MD, DM Medical Oncology of KMC Hospital.
