Brahmavar, Feb 19: Ashwini (28) from Bobbaryanakere Dandebettu near Mabukala in the taluk, who had been admitted into a hospital at Mangaluru with severe burn injuries, breathed her last on Sunday February 17 night.
It was earlier reported that Ashwini had sustained burn injuries after the cell phone in her hand had suddenly exploded. However, the incident has got a new twist with the emergence of fresh information that the tragedy happened on account of suicide attempt.
Ashwini, a part time lecturer, who was the daughter of Jalaja Marakalthi from Bobbaryanakere, it was said, was talking over her cell phone in the courtyard of her parental home when the mobile phone suddenly exploded. The earlier version also claimed that she immediately threw the phone towards a stack of dry hay which too caught fire as a result.
Ashwini was working as part time lecturer in a private college at Manuru Padukere, Kota, since the last five years. During this period, she had suffered from psychotic depression. She had been treated for the disorder and had recovered. Thereafter she had resumed duty as part time lecturer.
Ashwini had married Purushotham from Malpe on December 27, 2018. It is said that during the last one month, she had tried to end her life by consuming certain tablets when in the house of her husband. She was treated in hospital on both the occasions, but had remained mostly silent thereafter, her close ones say. She was on a visit to her parental home from February 14 onward. She appeared to be very close to her husband, and the couple had together visited the local temple and offered puja to the presiding deity.
On Sunday night, at around 7 pm, she poured kerosene on her body and torched herself inside the bathroom. Thereafter she breathed her last in a private hospital at Mangaluru. A complaint relating to this incident stands registered in Kota police station.
