Mangaluru, Jan 29: On the model of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's pet project, 'Swachh Bharat' campaign, 'No Horn Wednesday' has been launched in the city, with the active interest taken by the city (south) MLA, D Vedavyasa Kamath.
On Monday January 28, Kamath held meeting with drivers and owners of buses, auto rickshaws and cars and sought their support to making this concept a thundering success.
The meeting was held at Circuit House here. The MLA noted that horns of vehicles mainly contribute to the noise pollution in the city. "To reduce the noise pollution, we have planned 'No Horns Day' every week on Wednesdays. I request all the vehicle drivers to take special interest in making sure that vehicles are driven without blaring any horns. If buses, rickshaws and cars support this concept, we can expect a lot to happen on this front. In course of time, we can free the city of the sound of horns," he explained.
President of City Bus Owners Association, Dilraj Alva, Jayaram Shekhar of Bus Owners Association, Lokesh Shetty of Auto Rickshaw Driver s Association, Arun, Jayaram and office bearers of several organizations pledged support for this proposal. There was also a suggestion to make Hampankatta - Ambedkar Circle stretch into 'No Horn Zone' by planting a board and ensuring its strict implementation.
Kamath said he will soon visit schools, colleges, government offices, temples, mosques, churches, private institutions etc to spread this concept. He said that by avoiding horns, we can improve our health.
