Mumbai, Jan 28: While a child is a blessing to a family, its ill-health can be heart breaking for its parents. Such is the story of Snehal Pereira and Patrick Pereira, residents of Vasai in Mumbai.
The couple was delighted when they were blessed with a beautiful baby boy whom they named Skyler. Like any parent, they imagined the bright future they will provide for their child and even worked hard for it. However, the joy was short-lived when Skyler fell sick and started turning yellow.
The worried parents took him to the hospital and the doctors recommended a few blood tests. It was quite painful to see his arm being pricked by the nurses for the test, but they knew it was for his good. Although the couple tried calming Skyler, he was crying relentlessly and that is when they noticed that he was bleeding incessantly from the prick the blood was drawn. This put the parents as well as the doctors in panic and the doctors urged them to immediately rush Skyler to another hospital.
Snehal and Patrick could not make any sense of it. Their baby was only a month old then. Upon reaching the other hospital, their tiny little boy had to undergo several tests. He kept screaming and crying while his fragile body was pricked with needles to draw blood. Snehal and Patrick felt like it was the most dreadful moment of their lives but they were wrong. The worst was when the doctors informed them about their baby’s condition.
Skyler suffers from Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia, an ailment which causes abnormal accumulation of bile in the liver. Due to which, their 1-month-old baby had to immediately undergo Kasai Procedure (surgery to reconstruct the bile ducts and restore bile flow).
They were hopeful that after the surgery he will recover and will not have to suffer anymore. Doctors kept Skyler under observation for 3 months to see if the procedure was successful. Even though they were praying for him to get better, they could see that he was becoming weaker. All their nightmares came true when the doctors declared that the surgery had been unsuccessful and his condition was critical.
They were shattered to hear that their baby had to undergo a liver transplant to survive. The liver transplant will cost a staggering Rs 20,00,000 lac and they desperately need generous help to afford it for their eight month old. Snehal will be the donor of liver and the transplant surgery is planned at Kokila Ben Hospital, Andheri west, Mumbai under the observation of Dr Somanath Chattopadhyaya, Consultant and head of the Department HPB and Liver Transplant.
Patrick works as a driver and although they barely manage to make ends meet, they still try to keep some money aside for their son’s future. The couple already used up all their savings to get his first surgery done. Now, they are struggling to pay for the mounting medical bills. It’s even more difficult as none of the family members is ready to support them as they had married against their wishes.
