Mangaluru, Jan 27: Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister UT Khader inaugurated the newly built Urwa market at Urwa junction on Sunday, January 27.
The new market cum commercial complex is jointly built by Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). Having an area of 5,400 sq ft, the building was completed at a cost of Rs 12 crore. Total 122 shops are available in this market.
In his inaugural speech UT Khader said, "Mangaluru stands in second place after Bengaluru in terms of development. The infrastructure of Mangaluru is highly appreciated across the state. A well planned Urwa market was our dream. Former MLA JR Lobo and MUDA chairman Suresh Ballal did initial planning for this market. After the administration of MCC, engineering team and contractors completed the work of new building within a short time. I appreciate all who worked behind this new project. As a part of smart city, various developmental projects will take place across city. By this our city will get good reputation and its benefits will help people.”
In his speech Ivan D Souza, MLC and secretary of Parliamentary Affairs said, "The new Urwa market looks like a five star hotel. I have a request to people to keep the premises clean and also maintain the building. If our markets are clean our kitchens will also remain clean. Markets are very essential in various corners of the city. Government is considering this very seriously and hopes that in upcoming days more markets will come to city. If people support, the work will be done very quickly and smoothly.”
In his presidential speech Vedavyas Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru said, "In our nation people purchase shoes from air conditioned showrooms. However, the essential food items are sold on road side. It is hard reality of our nation. But Urwa market is available for common vendors and they can do business in this market with good facilities. It is my request to citizens of Mangaluru to visit this market and support vendors.”
Deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, mayor Bhaskar Moily, MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, corporator Jayathi were present.
Srikanth Rao, commissioner, Town Planning Board, Mangaluru, welcomed the dignitaries and gathering.
