Bantwal, Jan 23: The plea for a bus stand in BC road has been resonating for quite some time. While the demand by Bantwal residents fell on deaf ears all these years, with Lok Sabha polls few months away, they are hoping their demands will now be met by politicians at least for the sake of their votes.
The bus stand in the heart of the town was demolished around twelve years back and a commercial complex was built to generate income for the municipal council. The place was also converted into a private bus stand.
Today, people do not have a suitable place to wait for bus and have to bear scorching heat or heavy rain without a shelter. Their repeated pleas to higher officials and elected representatives on the issue seem to be of no use.
Though governments and officials changed, the situation in B C Road has remained the same. Slogans that Bantwal is changing can be heard. However, while issues affecting the heart of the town not being resolved, one can only imagine the challenges people face in the suburbs. Children and elderly people are currently seen waiting for buses holding umbrellas on national highway.
A bus bay is raised in front of the commercial complex. But it is of no use to people. A long queue of rickshaws in front of the bus bay makes people confused to understand which is a rickshaw stand and which is a bus stand.
It appears on the surface that what the municipal council does is only for its income and not for ordinary people. People still are hoping for a bus shelter. Travelers allege that there is no bus bay here even though there is ample space. They are now pinning hopes that a shelter or at least a temporary bus stand is constructed in BC Road.
