Mangalore: Seminar on Facets of Indian Nationalism at Besant Women College

Mangalore Jan.10: Independence movement of India and Nationalism movement are different. While the freedom struggle was anti-British, Nationalism movement was launched to save Indian culture, said Dr B Surendra Rao, Professor, department of history, Mangalore University.
He was speaking after inaugurating national seminar on `Facets of Indian Nationalism’ in Besant Women’s college.
`During every Independence day celebrations, I ask every one who wishes me with the question, `have we really got independence?’ he said. " We are not nationalized and the ndependence that we have got is only in paper but not in governance, police and administrative system. When we got independence, we constituted British like system for rule," he explained.
"Nationalism movement or struggle was not introduced at the time of the freedom struggle but since the times of the great Indian kings. During the rule of Chandra Guptha Mourya of Mourya dynasty as well as the times of other kings and also at the time of Ghori-Ghazni attack nationalism movement was on," said Rao.
In 18th century Rajaram Mohan Roy and after him, Bala Gangadhar Tilak were engaged with the Nationalism movement, he explained.
Correspondent of the Women’s National Education Society, Mohan Nayak Presided over the function. Principal of the college, Majula K T welcomed. Seminar convener Dr Savithri K was present.
Besant College is organizing the seminar with the sponsorship of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for two days.
