Moodbidri, Jan 20: Rotary Club, Moodbidri organised ‘Asha Spoorthi’, a day-long cultural and sports programme for Anganwadi workers on Sunday, January 20.
Prakash Karanth, president, Rotary Club Moodbidri zone, inaugurated the programme while Shamala C K, coordinator, Child and Women Welfare department, was the chief guest of the event.
Addressing the gathering, Prakash Karanth said, “We all know the Asha Workers are the second mother of kids. They are playing an important role in our society especially in the matter of rural healthcare. They are a ‘low-paid’ army of our country, but their dedication and commitment towards the society is highly appreciable. Knowing this, Rotary Club is organising various programmes for Anganwadi workers. We are concentrating on helping to improve the standard of thousands of Anganwadis in the country. ‘Asha Spoorthi’ is one of the programmes for Anganwadi workers to bring them together and to also felicitate them. I appreciate Rotary Club Moodbidri for their initiative.”
Shamala C K said, “In a country where quality healthcare remains a privilege of the rich and influential, a silent army of women, clad in pink sarees, work tirelessly and selflessly to make basic healthcare facilities accessible to those who live on the margins of the growing Indian economy, particularly in the country's vast rural hinterland. Making sacrifices every day to build a healthier society, these women find it hard to even make ends meet, earning a paltry sum for their services.
“By organising ‘Asha Spoorthi’ Rotary Club Moodbidri did a great honour to our Anganwadi workers. They provide a stage for all Asha workers to come together for a day. I am happy to see around 400 Asha workers gathered over here. Congratulation to Rotray Club and its office bearers,” she said.
In his introductory speech, Dr Ramesh, president, Rotary Club Moodbidri said, “The Asha workers of four zones are participating in this event. It is a part of our annual programme and we are very much happy that hundreds of Asha workers have gathered here. I thank the officials of Child and Women Welfare department for their support for this programme. There is no doubt that this will remain a memorable event in Asha workers’ lives.”
Asha workers zonal supervisors Bharathi, Katyani, Shubha, Rathi and office bearers of Rotary Club C H Gafoor, and Suraj were present. Avil D’Souza compered the event.
Before the inaugural ceremony, a procession was held from Moodbidri town to the venue of event proclaiming women empowerment.
