Puttur, Jan 18: The watchman of a temple at Uppinangady, who saw that an old couple was trying to commit suicide by jumping into the river, showed presence of mind and saved them. It is said that the two were frustrated at their regular bouts of friction with their daughter-in-law on various issues.

Gangadhar (70), resident of Karambaru House in Beltangady taluk, and his wife, Indira (62), wanted to kill themselves. They left their home on Wednesday evening and came to Uppinangady. They spent the night near the confluence of Rivers Kumaradhara and Netravati. The watchman of Lord Sahasralingeshwara Temple nearly had observed the couple. He kept a close watch on them.

At dawn on Thursday, the couple went to a place in the river that is very deep and jumped into it. When the couple started to drown, the watchman immediately alerted the police and plunged into rescue operation. The police, who saved the couple, summoned their son to the police station and asked him to take steps to take care of his parents properly.
