Convent transfers nuns who protested against Bishop Franco Mulakkal

Kerala, Jan 16: The four nuns from its Missionaries of Jesus convent in Kuravilangad who protested against rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the Jalandhar diocese were transferred by the convent in Kerala on Wednesday, January 16.

Sr Alphy Pallasseril, Sr Anupama Kelamangalathuveliyil, Sr Josephine Villoonnickal and Sr Ancitta Urumbil who held an indefinite strike near the Kerala High Court premises in Kochi last year, demanding the arrest of the rape-accused bishop are given transfer orders back to the convents they were previously assigned.

Sr Anupama has been given orders to return to Punjab, Sr Ancitta to Kannur, Kerala, Sr Alphy to Bihar and Sr Josephine to Jharkhand. These nuns since June last year have been staying at the Kuravilangad convent where the victim resides.

The transfer comes a few days after Sister Lucy Kalapura was warned by the convent for ‘attending channel discussions,’ ‘writing articles in non-Christian newspapers,’ and ‘making false accusations’ against the Catholic leadership.

The warning later stated, “Your deeds on 20th September 2018 and on the following days were of most grave external scandal and harm to the Church and the FCC. You went to the Ernakulam High Court junction and participated in the protest held by the SOS Action Council on 20-9-2018 without the permission of your superior.”

Mulakkal was accused of raping a nun belonging to the order of Missionaries of Jesus several times between 2014 and 2016. He was lodged in sub-jail at Pala for three days, before he got bail.

    2 weeks back, the human chain protest was conducted in kerala in support of women entering shabarimala temple & in the name of equality. in that protest thousands of Christian women also participated. but now they are silent in this issue. cant they want equality in their community also? cant they support this nun? what a double standard? people are only limited to give advice to others & they wont like it in their own home.

    Rapes and child molestations do not harm the church externally but protests seeking justice do. May be church leadership think only the sinners should be pardoned and not the victims or those who stand by the victims.

    Your observation is completely against the 3 vows ( not cows ) these nuns have taken in their profession while joining the Convent order ( Chastity, Obedience and Poverty ).
    Of course I do understand there can be a victim or no victim.
    A person is innocent until proven guilty by the judiciary. Dont make any one guilty for any crime, as 3 fingers point you first than the one you point against others.
    Last but not least, how these nuns know that the nun in question is a victim or not for certain, unless, they too did go along with alleged victim, which I am sure, the did not as they are based in a different areas in India.

    Religious persons must accept God's wish and live accordingly. Hope and pray the nuns who went on the protest will understand the real spiritual life.

    Oh beautiful, well done. So what next ?? You are going to file a sexual harrassment case on these nuns as well ? Supporting a culprit priest is like Jesus asking Jews if anyone didn't sin throw a stone . But except that you aren't Jesus. I hate your principles dear Church.

    Alwyn mangalore,this case is no more internal but become external and world wide secret.When a Bishop can commit rape as alleged and got bail,he is not punished ,still practicing as Religious head ,he is denying,then time to bring it out.why should Nuns pay for his sinns?Nuns have not done anything but only protested against it.How many times such things are and were hidden and closed by religious heads.?Victim had to suffer..Best is these nuns should comeout from their attire ,live as lay people. When they go elsewhere too,topic will be not closed and justice is still far away.

    Rita you have explained it very well.
    Nuns leave everything and join the convents and live in community. They sacrifice their wishes though they too are human beings.
    In such case, anything that happens internally say for ex. Rape, harassment, torture etc etc. Nuns should tolerate quietly and suffer and should not bring out to the notice of the society according to Alwyn?
    What alwyn would have done if he had to undergo any one of these situations ?
    Everyone has a right to live out of dignity. Speak out humanity wise.
    Other than bishop, if anyone out of our community done this, we would have kept quiet?
