Panaji, Jan 2: Two senior police officials were transferred following their raid on a ‘madrassa’, which gave rise to protests by Muslim organizations in the state.

Deputy superintendent of police Deu Banaulikar and police inspector Harish Madkaikar were transferred on New Year’s eve following allegations of harassment against them.

Both the officers had raided a madrassa in the port town of Vasco recently as the terror threat loomed large over the state.

In all, 88 teenage girls studying there were brought to the police station for verification. The ‘madrassa’ management had alleged that the police had misbehaved with them.

Muslim organizations including the association of all Goa Muslim Jamaats had condemned the act stating that the minority community was being harassed by police.

The madrassa management had stated that they had furnished all the details of the girls studying in the madrassa to the police.

The protest had garnered support from other social service organizations in the state.

The police had initiated an enquiry into the raid as the organizations had petitioned chief minister Digamber Kamat against the incident.

“Prime facie the officers were found guilty of unnecessarily shifting the girls from the madrassa to the police station. They have been relieved of their duties and are transferred to Goa Reserve police,” stated a senior police official.

Police said that they have ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter and further action would be decided once a report is availed.
