Mangaluru, Dec 30: Renowned Konkani poet, critic and the editor of the web portal kittall.com, H M Pernal is selected for Kavita Trust’s Mathias Family Poetry Award for the year 2018.
The award consisting of memento and cash reward of Rs 25000 will be conferred on him on 13January 2019 at the 13th edition of Kavita Fest organized by the trust to be held at World Konkani Center, at Shakthinagar, Mangaluru.
Henry M Mendonca, popularly known as HM Pernal in the Konkani literary world was born at Pernal in Udupi Taluk in the year 1968. He started his literary journey at the young age in the year 1983 and continued while pursuing B Com and D.B.M.
He writes fluently in Konkani, Kannada, English, Hindi and Marathi languages. Initially his poems were published in the famous Kannada periodicals like ‘Sankramana’‘Shoodra’ ‘Thaayinudi’ ‘Tharanga’ ‘Suddi-Sangathgi’ ‘Mallige’ and ‘Thushara’. He debuted in Konkani as a cartoonist in the periodical Amcho Yuvak and later started publishing, poems, articles and essays on poetry, in various other Konkani periodicals.
H M Pernal has published over 500 poems in the last 32 years. ‘Cholyank Chothrai’ ‘Bamunanchem Cheddum’ and ‘Kaidyachyo Kavita’ are the published anthologies of his poems. Two collections of his short stories also published. Having spent most of his years at Mumbai and Thane, his literary works are largely influenced by the life at the metro.
He has written forewords to many collections of poems of Konkani poets and has won first prizes in the poetry contests organized by the periodicals like ‘Raknno’ and ‘Kannik’. He was selected as the ‘Poet of the Year’ by website daaiz.com. He has written research articles on the poems of C F D’Costa, J B.Moraes, Melvyn Rodrigues, Ra Vi Pandith, Valley Quadras and many others and presented papers at various literary seminars and also at the Goa University.
He has participated and presided over various national level poetry recital sessions as well as symposiums held in Goa, Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka and represented Konkani poetry in the Amaravathi International’s Poetry Prism book. Currently he is the publisher of the Konkani periodical ‘Arso’.
It may be recalled here that recently he was conferred prestigious Smt Vimala V Pai award for the year 2018, by the World Konkani Center, for the best literary creation for his collection of short stories ‘Beeg Ani Bigath’.
He is residing at Kankanady, Mangaluru with his family consisting of wife Stella and daughters Hansil Rhea and Ruth Hanna.
Kavita Trust has announced that HM Pernal is selected for the 11thMathias Family Poetry award for his immense contribution for the literature in general and Konkani poetry in particular.
The award was instituted by Joseph Mathias, managing director, Merit Freight Systems, Dubai in the name of his family from Kuppepadvau.
