Udupi, Dec 29: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Zilla Sahakari Fish Marketing Federation, Mangaluru and Fisheries Department are jointly organising a mega event ‘State Level Fish Fest -2018’ to be held at Sri Ambigara Chaudayya Vedike, Malpe Beach, here on Sunday, December 30, said chairman of SK and Udupi District Cooperative Fish Marketing Federation, Yashpal Suvarna.
Addressing the reporters at the Udupi press club here on Friday, December 28, he said that the stage function of the one- day Fish Fest –2018 will be inaugurated by Venkat Rao Nadagowda, the state minister for fisheries and horticulture.
Dr Jayamala, district-in-charge minister, V Sunil Kumar, MLA Karkala, Shobha Karandlaje, MP, Udupi Chikkamagaluru, Nadoja Dr G Shankar, proprietor of G Shankar Family Trust, Udupi, Lalaji Mendon, MLA Kaup, B M Sukumar Shetty, MLA Byndoor, Dinakar Babu, president, Zilla panchayat, Dr H S Ballal, pro chancellor, MAHE University, Kishore Alva, joint president of Adani group and others will be present.
“This fest is organised to encourage fishing activities and to promote seafood consumption. The department is expecting 1 lac people to participate in the event,” Yashpal added.
The mega event includes Desi style of (traditional) fresh seafood which will be available at different counters, swimming competition for public including water amusement sports, traditional kairampani fishing, volleyball for men, throw ball for women. There is beach kabaddi for men and women teams. Tug war, sand art competition, drawing competition is also being organised. Cash prize and awards for winners will be given.
Canine show, kite expo, and cultural activities which will be performed by International level artists are the other main attractions. Felicitation programme is also being organised.
The Fisheries Association will hand over a memorandum to minister Venkat Rao Nadagowda, which includes pension for fishermen over 60 years of age, providing loans on zero interest, to increasing the quantity of kerosene for boats, cancellation of cess on diesel, forming a separate fisheries industrial zone, fisheries harbour development, to extending agricultural facilities to this sector, to form a separate union ministry for fisheries. A seminar session will be held on challenges of fishing and the scope for development of fishing in future.
The fest aims to promote fishing and fishing business, development of tourism, encouraging sports activities, informed Yashpal.
