Mangaluru, Dec 27: "In the Indira Canteen, which was started to provide meals at subsidized rates to the poor by the former government, huge misappropriation of funds has taken place. Not even 100 people are visiting the Indira Canteens that are being run under the limits of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). However, the corporation is paying a bill for 500 people every day to the contractor," accused BJP.
Vijay Kumar Shetty, BJP corporator, who proposed this issue in the MCC meeting that was held on Wednesday, December 26 said, "MCC has paid more than Rs 75 lac to the contractor of Indira canteens. Except the Indira canteen near the Lady Goschen Hospital, in all other canteens public is not seen. Though even 100 people are not having food in these canteens, the corporation is paying the contractor a bill for 500 people every day. Who verifies the tokens that are distributed there in the canteens?"
Replying to the accusation of the BJP corporator, K Bhaskar, mayor of MCC said, "An officer will be nominated from the MCC to verify the functioning of Indira canteens. CCTV footage will be used to check the number of customers that visit these canteens. Suitable action will be taken, if any misuse is confirmed,"
