Mangaluru, Dec 25: “There are three main obstacles in imparting speedy justice to the people and subordinate courts should work to remove them,” advised Supreme Court judge, Justice S Abdul Nazeer.
He was speaking after releasing the work, ‘The Wheel of Justice’ authored by former Karnataka chief minister and MP, Dr M Veerappa Moily.
“Large number of pending cases are causing problems in delivering timely justice. Lack of knowledge about their legal rights among the people and lack of financial resources to pursue cases have turned out to be the main obstacles in the judicial system in the country. Lower courts should act to remove such obstacles,” said Justice Abdul Nazeer.
“Detailed discussion on legal system can be found in each chapter of the book written by Veerappa Moily. Therefore, the book should be considered a part of the college curriculum,” he felt.
Veerappa Moily expressed the view that it is necessary to introduce competitive examinations similar to IAS and IPS in Indian judicial system for appointment of judges. “Competitive examinations provide an opportunity to experts in the field to make the legal system stronger,” he said.
“There are a large number of instances where suspects under trial are slogging in prisons due to lack of financial resources. Speedy disposal of cases is very much essential for helping them,” he said.
District and sessions judge Kadur Satyanarayana Acharya, district judge Yadava Karkera, member of legislative council, Ivan D’ Souza, veteran lawyer, Vijayakumar, P P Hegde, Mangaluru Bar Association president M R Ballal and others were present.
"I have put together and written whatever I experienced as a lawyer, state and union minister, compared the constitution of our country with the others, conducted research and released the book after showing it to legal experts,” Moily said.
