Kundapur woman first from Karnataka to get Saudi driving licence

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Dec 21: A woman of Kundapur origin happens to be the first woman from Karnataka to have secured driving licence in Saudi Arabia after the Gulf nation lifted ban on driving of vehicles placed on women. Dr Vanishree Santosh Shetty has passed the driving test and got her licence. Her husband, Santosh Shetty, has his house in Konjady.

Vanishree is from Albady near here. She lives in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, since the last 15 years along with husband and two sons. She is a dentist by profession. She got her driving licence on November 21 and became the first woman from Karnataka to get Saudi driving licence.

Vanishree, who has immense interest in driving, had got Indian driving licence in 2002. She yearned to get a driving licence in Saudi Arabia too as she need not be dependent on others if she can drive the vehicle herself. After she got married and shifted base to Saudi Arabia, she did not get a chance to drive there because of local restrictions.

Vanishree says that people in Saudi Arabia raise their eyebrows at women drivers as only a handful are now driving cars on the roads there. She says that Saudi women get preference in issuance of driving licence. Saramma Thomas from Pattanamthitta district, Kerala, was the first Indian woman to get driving licence in Saudi Arabia, Vanishree says.

It is true that many persons including Indians who work as drivers in Saudi Arabia face the risk of losing jobs because of the liberalized driving licence policy as Saudi citizens normally appoint drivers for their vehicles both in houses and offices. Moreover, commercial institutions give preference to men drivers. Therefore, professional drivers do not get affected that much, Vanishree feels.

Vanishree reveals that driving test at Saudi is very rigid and it poses challenge to Indian drivers. At the same time, women inspectors have been appointed to investigate accidents involving women drivers. These inspectors are appointed and trained by private insurance companies, she adds.

Vanishree Shetty is happy that she can save on time and expenses now as she had to depend on driver or husband till now to reach office or other destinations.

    Women need freedom in Saudi. Imposing rules on non Muslims with force to wear religious wear is disrespectful . If Indian govt bans such attires for muslims in India hhow it will impact the muslims? Saudi govt has to stop such undemocratic way of teat Hindus and other religions in their countries. Everyone respects religious beliefs but forced she is. It good and not appropriate

    In India,we never had any issues with women empowerment.
    Both franchise and driving licence system was automatically given at the same time as men.
    It's a shame that it's being done now in Saudi.

    India needs to improve a lot in terms of women empowerment. How many women are harassed, raped in India. There is dowry harassment which is only in India. And the trial takes years for judgement. In gulf hardly any rape happens and judgement is delivered in 3 months if it happens.

    The issues are different. The Indian system is a legacy of the British System and has not been modified to keep pace with the modern times and the current population. It affects everyone. The problem with the Gulf system is that it is dependent on the whims of the Judge and his interpretation of the Shariah system. The minorities and expatriates are usually at a disadvantage. In India, the rich and mighty are king and the middle class and the poor bear the brunt of the system.

    During Kuwait liberation, which was called "operation desert storm", large number of US military personnel were stationed in Dhahran, Military men and women were freely driving in Dammam and Al_khobar with half pants and very scanty upper clothing. Once a Mutawa (Religious man) stopped one girl. Girl stopped the vehicle and took out the gun , pointing towards him asked "What". Mutawa ran for his life and later, mutawas were instructed by govt not to interfere with military.

    @Pedda,

    In some European countries, and the USA, people can be found literally half naked in public places. Even they call it freedom of expression and justify by saying that "My body, my right".

    So no need to make fun for wearing a dress that covers your complete body. Just keep quiet if you cannot do that. It's a tragedy that wearing fully covered dress in public places invites more criticism than roaming half naked openly.

    You proved his point. Telling him to keep quiet validates his statement that there is no or very little "freedom of expression".

    @Chittar Kumar,

    I have told him keep quiet as it is also a freedom of expression. Only he has freedom of expression? Not me? Further, I have not used any bad words to him.

    I have told him to keep quiet as I have already elaborated on how wearing a fully covered dress is not form of oppression.

    Nawaz, looks like you missed a point. People who claim 'my body my right' choose to dress what they want by CHOICE. But if somebody have to wear a fully covered dress by FORCE it is a kind of oppression in a civilized society.
