Bhatkal, Dec 18: Four members of a family including three children drowned in River Kali at Bommanalli village in Haliyal taluk on Monday December 17 afternoon.

The deceased were Dhulu Gavade (48), his son, Krishna Dhulu Gavade (6), nephew, Satish Beeru Gavade (7), and daughter, Gayatri Dhulu Gavade (9).

Sources said that Gayatri Gavade, who was playing on the river bank near her home, suddenly slipped and drowned in the river. Her mother, Rani Bai, who was washing clothes nearby, rushed to save her daughter. Seeing that Gayatri was drowning, Krishna and Satish jumped into the river in an effort to rescue her.

Rani's husband, Dhulu Gavade, who saw that the children were in peril, jumped into the river and tried his best to save them. Unfortunately, only Rani could be saved with the help of some sand workers working nearby, while all others drowned in the river.

Search for bodies of the family members is on. On Monday evening, the mortal remains of Gayatri could be recovered. A case in this respect was registered in Ambikanagar police station.
