Kaup, Dec 15: In an accident which happened near Korangrapady Cross at Udyavara near here on the evening of Thursday December 13, a woman who had got down from a bus and walking toward the hospital was killed after a car knocked her down.
The deceased was Saraswati Devadiga (60) from Kaup - Padoor. She had visited Udupi along with her daughter and grandchildren to take part in Shashti festival there. On the way back home, she had planned to visit a relative who was admitted into a hospital at Udyavara. However, as luck would have it, she was killed in an accident before reaching the hospital.
Saraswati, on getting down from the bus near Korangrapadi bus stand in Udyavara, crossed the highway and walked near Babbuswamy Daivasthana when a car speeding toward Udupi hit her hard. The car sped away after the accident, it is learnt.
The woman suffered deep injuries in her head and waist because of the accident. She was immediately taken to a private hospital at Udupi but the doctors who checked her said she had breathed her last by then.
The police seized the car which had escaped after causing the accident on the basis of CCTV footage. The front parts of the car had come off on account of the accident. The car could be identified on the basis of the explanation provided by people accompanying the deceased and also the recording in the CCTV camera located at Katapadi police outpost.
The car, after causing the accident, had returned toward Katapadi, dropped off a person there and moved ahead. The CCTV camera footage showed that the passenger who got down from the car had spoken to a local merchant before going away by scooter. The police who observed these developments, identified the scooter rider through the merchant and then collected details of the car driver.
A case stands registered against the car driver, Muhammed Adyan from Udupi, who had caused the accident and investigation has been undertaken.
