Kundapur, Dec 10: For setting a shop in Gangolli on fire four years ago as well as torching vehicles, the Kundapur additional district and session court on Monday, December 10, sentenced accused Mohammed Junaid and Welding Jaffer to one year’s rigorous imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine under section 451, two years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine under section 427 and seven year’s rigorous imprisonment and Rs 20,000 fine under section 436.
On January 21, 2015, the accused had set fire to Venkatesh sports shop near Gangolli main road as well as the godown owned by Venkatesh Shenoy. They also torched Chevrolet car parked in front of the house, Ritz car and other vehicles. Police had arrested Gangolli based Mohammed Junaid and Welding Jaffer on the basis of CCTV footage and submitted chargesheet to the court.

Shop owner Venkatesh Shenoy who heard noise outside his shop on January 21 2015, had come out and found strangers setting fire to his shop in communally sensitive Gangolli. He had pleaded with them but the accused ignored him, set fire to the shop and fled. A police complaint was registered in this connection.
Gangolli police sub inspector Subbanna and staff conducted investigations under the leadership of the then SP Annamalai, Kundapur DySP Manjunath Shetty and Byndoor CPI Sudarshan. They used CCTV footage and other technology, registered a case of illegal entry to the building under IPC section 451, for setting fire under section 436 and causing loss under section 427 and submitted the chargesheet to court within fifteen days of the incident.
Kundapur additional district and session court justice Prakash Khanderi heard the trial of the accused. District session court government prosecutor Prakash Shetty argued for the prosecution.
