Mangaluru, Dec 9: In memory of Late Fr Walter Albuquerque, music legend and one of the most respected clergymen of land, a quiz and singing competition was launched by Saregama Trust and Swaranjali Music Institute at St Joseph centenary hall, Jeppu on Saturday, December 8.
Fr Stanislaus D'souza, provincial, Jesuits congregation, Karnataka Province graced as chief guest for the event. Fr Joseph Martis, rector, St Joseph Seminary, Mangaluru, 'Konkan Maina' Meena Rebimbus, Dr Rose Veera D’Souza, associate professor, St Aloysius College, Anil Lobo, Chairman, MCC bank were present as guest of honours.
Launching the competitions Fr Stanislaus said, “Organising a mobile based quiz and singing competition, Saregama Trust headed by Simon Pais, one of the close disciple of Fr Walter Albuquerque is doing great work. We all know how Fr Walter was passionate about music. He succeeded in spreading the essence of his music all over the world. He had thousands of foreign fans. God graced him with talents. A tall man but in nature always bent with patience and love, he became adorable to all. He liked to teach the hymns to people and we can’t forget some of his hymns forever.”
“Fr Walter belonged from a music family and learned music in his childhood itself. When he completed his novitiate, he became a champion of music. Then he attended many music seminars around the globe. It is great that Simon took the initiative to introduce his name and legendary works to new generation. It is very essential,” he stressed.
In his welcome speech Fr Joseph Martis said, “Fr Walter Albuquerque was not only a musician but also a good organiser and team leader. Apart from this, he was also a good humanitarian. His contribution for the liturgy of Konkani mass stands very high. He translated thousands of hymns from Latin and English to Konkani. Being a good religious person he lived with love of God.”
Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza, spiritual director of Saregama Trust welcomed the dignitaries and guests. Simon Pais briefed the origin of Saregama Trust and its activities. Anil Lobo wished the trust and its members for their upcoming projects.

The singing and quiz competition is conducted on whatsapp. Every week organizers will send the questions on whatsapp group which is particularly created for the competition. The first place winner will be rewarded Rs 25,000 and runner up will get Rs 20,000. Third place holder will get Rs 15,000.
