Mangaluru: Air pollution harming health of street vendors - RTO study finding

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 7: The result of a study undertaken by  the Regional Transport Office (RTO) here and Anti Pollution Drive Foundation (APD) about the effect of vehicular pollution on the health of the people that was recorded in a research article, 'Effect of air pollution on health of outdoor workers', was presented at a programme held at the RTO office here recently;

In the research article, APD has recorded the result of the pulmonary function test results it had undertaken under its 'Clean air' project. This was the extended part of lungs function and breathing evaluation tests conducted by it earlier on auto rickshaw drivers and traffic police. This time, the tests were conducted on street vendors.

Speaking at the programme, senior scientist of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Jayaprakash Nayak, said that buses and auto rickshaws cause highest air pollution. He wanted the emission testing centres to function more efficiently to address the problem and not to issue certificates to vehicles having high levels of pollution.

Abdurrahman, president of APD, has asked the government to undertake similar studies and realize the extent of environment pollution. He said that APD is prepared to join hands with the government to undertake these tests.

    There is no need to do any tests ..We all know this is obvious ..What needs to be done is to know how we can control it.
    Cities in north have shifted to Battery vehicles ..similarly all vehicles in mangalore should shift to alternate modes of fuel ..

    Corruption plays a major role in the Mangalore RTO office.

    Every bus playing in the city without exception leaves heavy black smoke. I spoke to a traffic police. He said that they pay a pittance as fine if and when caught,which seems to be rarely and the bus owners live their luxurious lives at a beach house or farm house. The bureaucrats should be held responsible le for this blatant flouting of rules. Fines should be heavily increased and the bureaucrats should be accountable.

    First shift the service bus stand to Pumpwell, then see automatically we can solve 90% of air pollution. Busses as well as auto will automatically move outskirts of Mangalore. Till that time no solution. Administration want to take action against street vendors and they protect the Bus and auto. I can't understand who has selected Mangalore for Smart City group !!!!. Our RTO and Traffic dept is responsible for air pollution.

    RTO has done study only on street vendors? What about the rest of the people of Mangaluru? Like school children, working people, laborers and even the people staying and walking on the road side? Are they not affected? Can see a lot of Rikshaws, buses and trucks emitting smoke. Agree with Jayaprakash Nayak.

    Why do you need a study to find out the obvious? Just another method to distribute taxpayer's money to private hands. Why doesnt RTO spend money to build proper test tracks in every district headquarters and do license testing stringently. So many decades after independence, we dont have a test track in Mangalore-the city having second highest vehicle sales in Karnataka.
