Panaji, Dec 6: The Goa Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) department which had banned the import of fish from other states on October 29, among growing concerns over the presence of formalin in fish, ended the impasse on Thursday.

Nine trucks from Karnataka containing fish were allowed to proceed to Margoa market in South Goa.

“The trucks are given entry only after they were found abiding by all the guidelines laid down by the FDA department. This mechanism has been put in place by FDA, and even in future Goa government will ensure that the wholesale traders follow all the rules,” State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told media.

Recently, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumarswamy had written to Goa CM Manohar Parrikar requesting him to withdraw the ban imposed on the import of fish in the state. However, Rane had responded that the ban would continue till traders comply with the FDA directives.

Margao Wholesale Fish Market Association President Ibrahim Maulana assured to abide by all rules by FDA. “All queries regarding import will be answered by the association. We request not to politicize the issue of fish,” he said.

Apart from the import, 10 trucks carrying fish from Goa left for Karnataka.
