Mangaluru: Lady Goschen Hospital in crying need gets Rs 5.7 crore grant

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 6: Lady Goschen Hospital here, which was badly in need of funds to improve its infrastructure, has finally got the grant it needed. With the efforts of people's representatives from the region, MRPL-ONGC has sanctioned an additional grant of Rs 5.7 crore to the hospital.

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital, which witnesses about 6,000 childbirths every year, was not able to provide good service to patients because of shortage of equipment. Doctor of the hospital, Dr Kiran Baliga, had urged MLA, Vedavyas Kamath through a WhatsApp message a few days back, informing about the large number of childbirths handled by the hospital and the fact that the hospital is in urgent need for equipment in NICU.

Kamath had responded by way of message, asking the doctor to personally speak to him and explain about the problems faced.

Dr Kiran Baliga later met the MLA and informed him about the problems personally. The MLA and MP immediately wrote to MRPL-ONGC seeking additional financial assistance to the hospital. They have succeeded in convincing the company to part with Rs 5.7 crore grant.

MRPL-ONGC had provided funds to the new building of Lady Goschen Hospital out of its corporate social responsibility fund.   It has now met the needs of the hospital by way of providing equipment and furniture, paucity of which was creating lot of problems for the doctors and the patients alike.

Government hospitals extend highly subsidized treatment at taxpayers cost. While a normal delivery cost Rs.20,000/-, a Cesarean section may cost approximately Rs. 75,000/-. This highly subsidized treatment should be restricted up to two delivery or two children and should be charged on cost basis thereafter. By extending subsidy beyond this, Government is sabotaging its own plan in population control. If the choice for having more than two children is admissible on personal preference and freedom, the least let that should not happen at the cost of taxpayers......!

Credit for getting the CSR fund should go to Mr Yogesh Bhat former Deputy Speaker who initiated the process. First letter of request for fund of 5.7 crores was sent from the office of Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada on 30th May 2018. Thanks to both DC and Mr. Bhat

creating a confusion here by Dr Shantharam Baliga. May be your right that the request for CSR fund might have initiated earlier. As per this news article, MLA Vedavyas Kamath expedited as requested by Dr Kiran Baliga. You should have given credit to all who had made this happen instead of giving it to two people who are not even mentioned in this news article.

I agree with Dr. Shantharam Baliga. The fund release from a government organization is a tedious process over few months. if you read Mr. Vedavyas Kamaths Instagram message on 4th, it appears he understood the problem of lady Goschen hospital only 4ht December . Today news paper carries different story he has solved the problem in 24hrs! He can expedite the pump well flyover and complete in a moth
Dr. Shantharam Baliga was instrumental in starting Neonatal Intensive care Unit at Lady Goschen hospital in 1998. Since then the facilities have been improved periodically due to continued efforts by Dr. Shantharam Baliga. He was instrumental along with few of colleagues to establish Special newborn care units in 19 district hospitals across the state between 2009 and 2011 when Mr. Madan Gopal was principle Health secretary. The tertiary care center Regional Advanced Pediatric Care Center at Wenlock came in to existence as a result of his persistent efforts.
The new NICU which I have seen in the new building is designed by Dr. B. Shantharam Baliga is one of the state of art center when it becomes fully functional. He is well aware of the facts.

It's sad that the women are not provided basic necessities such as hot water for bath even after they have had a cesarean. We speak of Human rights, women's rights and what not. The old hospital had rats moving inside patients rooms. Hope this grant will be used in a proper way.
